Benicia, CA : Three Dead in Interstate 680 Off-Ramp Crash in Benicia on Tuesday, August 26, 2014
Three people in their 70s from the Bay Area were killed in a solo-vehicle crash that followed a minor accident with another car Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 680 near Benicia, officials said.
About 3:45 p.m., a Kia Spectra and an Acura, both driving northbound, got into a fender-bender near the Lake Herman Road off-ramp in unincorporated Solano County, said CHP Officer Rick Weaver.
The driver of the Acura honked and motioned for the driver of the Kia, a 76-year-old man from Vacaville, to get off the freeway to check for damage, Weaver said.
As both vehicles were exiting on the off-ramp, the Kia began to drift onto the shoulder, and hit a wall of a drainage canal before becoming briefly airborne, Weaver said.
