Palm City, FL : Fire chief crashes into tractor-trailer on Martin Highway on Tuesday, February 23, 2016
A Martin County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief was involved in a serious wreck as he was responding to an accident.
Battalion Chief Scott Legg had his siren and emergency lights on as he was driving west to Indiantown on Martin Highway, according to the Martin County Sheriff's Office, when a tractor-trailer tried to cross the highway and pulled out in front of Legg.
The truck's driver told WPBF's John Dzenitis that he had just gotten off I-95 southbound in Palm City and was turning left across Martin Highway when the chief, heading west at a high rate of speed, slammed into the back left corner of his trailer.
The force of the crash ripped off the semi's rear axle and wheels.
Legg's injuries were non-life-threatening and he is recovering at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center. The truck driver was not injured.
The case has been turned over to the Florida Highway Patrol. An FHP spokesperson said the truck's driver may be cited for failure to yield.
