RED BAY, AL : Red Bay student killed in Monday night crash on Monday,February 6th 2017
Football coach Michael Jackson said Tuesday was a sad day at Red Bay High School after students and school officials learned of the death of 17-year-old Bradley Shane Wilemon.
“Bradley was a good kid. The other students really liked him,” Jackson said.
Sgt. Ray Hall, a public information officer with the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s New Albany post, said Wilemon died Monday evening from injuries sustained in the crash, which occurred around 2 p.m. Monday on Mississippi 366 near Golden, Mississippi.
He said Wilemon was airlifted to North Mississippi Medical Center where he died.
Hall said another Red Bay resident, Tarin Puckett, 22, was injured in the four-car accident and was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
The drivers of the other two vehicles were not injured.
Principal Kenny Sparks said Wilemon was a junior at the high school. Sparks got word of the student’s death Monday during the girl’s area basketball tournament that is being played at Red Bay.
“We knew there was a wreck, but no one knew exactly how bad,” Sparks said. “Then about the middle of the game, we started getting word that he had passed away. That put a damper on the ballgame.”
He said extra counselors were at the school to meet with students.
“We feel for his family and his friends,” Sparks said. “Bradley was a good young man. Our students are hurting; they lost a friend.”
He said several churches had special prayers Tuesday for the family and the students.
“They’re supporting us in prayer and thought, helping us to get through this,” Sparks said. “We’re all trying to deal with this. This is a close-knit community, and he was well known. When a community loses a young man, it’s tough on everyone.”
Hall said Wilemon was driving a 2002 Ford Mustang and was traveling west. He said Wilemon was attempting to pass two vehicles when his Mustang collided head-on with an east-bound 2012 Chevrolet pickup driven by Puckett.
He said the accident remains under investigation.
