Easton, PA : Wilson man gets up to 6 years in fatal DUI crash on Friday, 2nd September 2016
Northampton County man will serve up to six years in state prison for the drunk driving crash that killed an Easton woman as she walked home from work in January. Northampton County Judge Craig Dally sentenced Marc Delserro on Friday to three to six years after pleading guilty in July to homicide by vehicle for the drunk driving death of 53-year-old Melody Johnson. The judge also sentenced Delserro to up to six months for driving under the influence. The sentences will be served concurrently, and the 37-year-old will lose his driver’s license for four years after his release from prison.Delserro was driving in the 1900 block of Northampton Street in Wilson about 3:45 p.m. Jan. 29, when he struck Johnson before hitting a fire hydrant and crashing into the façade of Davis Optical at 20th and Northampton streets. Johnson died about five hours later. Assistant District Attorney Joseph Lupackino said the case highlights the dangers of drunk driving. Blood tests showed that Delserro’s blood alcohol level was 0.24 percent, when he struck a pedestrian, Lupackino said. A drug and alcohol evaluation revealed that the Wilson man began drinking when he was 17 years old and that he was drinking a six-pack and two shots of liquor three or four times a week when he was 21, according to the prosecution. Lupackino said he recommended that Delserro serve his prison term in a facility that provides the necessary addiction treatment, and that it’s his “sincere hope” he continues to seek treatment. “When he’s released from state prison, he’s going to continue to have those urges,” Lupackino said. About 11 people attended Friday’s sentencing in support of Delserro. They stood to show their support, but did not address the court. The defense called the incident a wake-up call, and Delserro told Dally that he hasn’t had a drink since the crash. “And I will not have another drink again,” he said.
