Anchorage, AK : Motorcyclist killed in Anchorage crash was thrown from bike on Saturday night, June 25, 2016

A motorcyclist killed on a busy Anchorage road Saturday night lost control while speeding and was thrown from his bike, the Anchorage Police Department said Sunday.

Witnesses told police that the motorcyclist was stopped at a red light in the southbound lanes of Minnesota Drive at Spenard Road around 7:53 p.m. on Saturday.

When the light turned green, the motorcyclist took off "at a high rate of speed," said APD spokeswoman Renee Oistad.

He lost control, began doing "speed wobbles" and was thrown from the bike, she said. His body hit a light post at the southwest corner of Minnesota and Jefferson Avenue.

The motorcyclist was a member of the military, Oistad said. She did not know which branch.

The man's name will be released when his next-of-kin has been notified, she said.
