Acton, CA : Two people dead after car plummets down ravine near Acton on Sunday morning, February 8, 2015
Two people are dead after the car they were in plunged down a 200-foot ravine near Acton early Sunday morning, emergency response crews said.
Dead is Justin Nichols, 19, of Acton, identified as the driver of a 2002 Chevy Camaro that went down a ravine off of Sierra Highway, according to California Highway Patrol officers and investigators with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department.
The passenger has been identified only as a 21-year-old Acton man, CHP Sgt. J. Nelson said in a news release issued early Sunday.
The (passenger) victim was so badly burned that investigators with the Coroner’s Department are still trying to confirm his identity, said Coroner’s spokesman Lt. Larry Dietz.
Shortly before 3:45 a.m. Sunday, paramedics were dispatched to a traffic collision on Sierra Highway near the Angeles Forest Highway, said Fire Department Inspector Al Jackson.
“We got the call as a vehicle off the side and as a vehicle fire,” he said, describing the ravine as 200 feet deep. “It was a double fatality — both died at the scene.”
The car was found at the bottom of the ravine.
“The 2002 Chevy Camaro was traveling southbound on Sierra Highway north of Soledad Canyon Road, at an unknown speed,” Nelson said in the news release.
“For unknown reasons, the (driver) lost control of the vehicle and it traveled over the embankment on the east edge of Sierra Highway,” he said. “Both occupants sustained fatal injuries at the scene.”
