Beaufort, SC : Savannah man dead in a crash on U.S. 17, north of the Georgia state line early Sunday morning, August 14, 2016
A Savannah man is dead following a crash early Sunday morning on U.S. 17 just north of the Georgia state line.
Michael Crawford, 34, was driving a 2005 Mazda SUV that ran off the right side of the southbound side of U.S. 17 before the vehicle came back on the road, ran across the left side and struck a 2016 Toyota four-door traveling northbound, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The Mazda overturned and Crawford was ejected, the patrol said. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, the patrol said.
Crawford was taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah and later died of injuries.
Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls III identified Crawford as the victim on Monday.
The driver of the Toyota was identified as Beverly Toatley, 42. She was also taken to the Savannah hospital for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, the patrol said.
