Two children lost their mom in a tragic Mother’s Day collision overnight when another vehicle crossed the centerline on a Laguna Beach, Calif., roadway, authorities said.

The late night crash happened when a married elderly couple sideswiped the 31-year-old mother as she drove down El Toro Road with her kids, ages 5 and 8. Both vehicles spun out of control during the 12:30 a.m. collision.

The children never saw how the crash wounded their mother. A person who called 911 pulled the kids out of the wreck and had them sit in his own vehicle until paramedics arrived.

"I found that very touching because they're not having to sit there and see what's going on with their mother, and he got them out of the area as quickly as possible," Capt. Jason Kravetz told the Associated Press.

The mother, a resident of Mission Viejo, was cut out her car by firefighters, but later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The collision also critically injured the 86-year-old driver of the other vehicle when his car flipped several times, but the passenger, his wife, escaped without any serious injuries.
