North Canton,OH : N. Canton firefighter dies in off-duty crash on June, Sunday 25th 2017

A North Canton man died Sunday evening when his pickup truck went out of control and off the road in Monroe County.

Dru R. Rhodes, 39, suffered severe head injuries. He was pronounced dead at the accident scene. An 8-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and was sent to Marietta Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The crash occurred at about 6:10 p.m. in Bethel Township on County Road 59, according to the St. Clairsville Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

Troopers said Rhodes lost control of his GMC pickup as he went through a curve to the right. The truck went off the left side of the road, hit a ditch and rolled onto its side. Rhodes wasn’t wearing a seat belt and he was partially thrown from the vehicle, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation, and alcohol doesn’t appear to be a factor, troopers said.

Rhodes worked as a firefighter and paramedic for the North Canton Fire Department. He also served as a part-time North Canton police officer.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of one of our own,” the North Canton Fire Department wrote in a Facebook post.

“Please keep his family and our department in your prayers.”
