Columbia County, GA : Fatal 18-wheeler accident on Gordon Highway and Bath Road on Friday, 3rd January, 2020

A Harlem man was killed in a head-on collision with an 18-wheeler on Gordon Highway and Bath Road in Columbia County.

Isabelo Chavit Lavarias, 80, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Lavarias was driving a Dodge Durango when he crossed the center lane into on-coming traffic and into the path of the tractor trailer.

The driver of the tractor trailer was unable to avoid Lavarias. According to the sheriff’s office, the tractor-trailer overturned on its side before coming to a stop and the driver sustained minor injuries. According to dispatch, the trailer was carrying wood chips.

The collision was called in around 12:30 p.m. and no charges are expected to be filed.

A detour was set up to Old Louisville Road after the collision closed all lanes on Gordon Highway. All lanes have reopened.
