Miami, FL : Detective killed in rear-end crash will be remembered Friday in public ceremony on Friday, 19th August, 2016

The Fort Lauderdale detective killed over the weekend in a violent rear-end crash in Coral Springs will be remembered Friday in a public ceremony held at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

Christopher Sheehan, 30, was headed north on State Road 7 at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday in his Jeep Wrangler when a Dodge Challenger, driven by 29-year-old Joselyn Lopez, slammed into him. Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that alcohol and speed may have been factors in the crash.

Sheehan, a seven-year veteran who most recently was assigned to the investigations bureau, died at the scene and his passenger Jacob Snowhite, 41, was taken to Northwest Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. On Monday, a witness told the Sun-Sentinel that Snowhite, a Fort Lauderdale firefighter, tried to rescue his friend.

“He was trying to run to the car, saying, ‘That’s my friend. I’ve got to get him out,’” Dan Pridemore, who was on his way home when he spotted what he called “a huge fireball,” told the paper.

Also on Monday, Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Frank Adderly reacted to Sheehan’s death.

“We are all deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our brother and friend, Detective Sheehan,” he said in a statement. “Chris faithfully and unselfishly served the residents and businesses in the City of Fort Lauderdale for the last seven years, touching everyone he came in contact with including his fellow employees.”

The services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, 201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale.
