Axtell, NE : Two Wahoo men dead in crash at Highway 6/34 on Sunday evening, May 8, 2016
Two Wahoo men died in an accident Sunday near Axtell.
According to a press release from the Kearney County Sheriff's Office, the accident was at about 9 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 44 and Highway 6/34 about two miles west of Axtell.
A 1998 Buick Le Sabre driven by Christopher L. Roberts, 21, of Wahoo was northbound on Highway 44 when it failed to stop at the stop sign at Highway 6/34.
The Buick was struck by a 2007 Freightliner tractor/trailer driven by Ronnie L. Wagner, 40, of Bertrand that was east-bound on Highway 6/34.
Roberts and his passenger, Jacob Wiebold, 21, of Wahoo were pronounced dead at the scene. Wagner was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney by the Axtell Volunteer Fire and Rescue with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Officers are investigating whether seat belts were in use and whether alcohol was a factor in the accident. The accident is under investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol, the Kearney County Sheriff's Office and the Kearney County Attorney's Office.
Assistance was provided by the Axtell and Wilcox Fire Departments, the Minden Police Department, the Nebraska Department of Roads and the Kearney County Road Department.
