Lake Point, UT : 2 pull man from crashed semitrailer before it bursts into flames in Tooele County on Wednesday, Sep 9, 2015

Fast-acting passers-by retrieved a semitrailer driver from his cab shortly before it burst into flames following a crash Wednesday, police said.

The Colorado man was flown by helicopter to University Hospital for "moderate injuries" he suffered after his vehicle veered to the right on state Route 36 and crashed into a large hotel sign just before 11 a.m., said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Chad McCoy.

A sheriff's deputy and an off-duty firefighter witnessed the crash and hurried to the driver's aid.

"It could have been a lot worse," he said.

McCoy said the man, who told police he blacked out just moments before the crash, didn't suffer any burns.

"It's looking more like a medical issue than impairment at this point, but it’s still in the investigation stage," he said.

Firefighters were called to the scene, near the intersection of state Route 36 and Saddleback Boulevard in unincorporated Lake Point. Crews quickly doused the truck fire.

The semitrailer driver was hauling frozen baked goods in his trailer, which wasn't damaged by the crash or the fire.
