A 57-year-old man pulling a small utility trailer with his 1953 Ford pickup was hit from the rear by a semi on Interstate 29 about 11 miles south of Grand Forks and died in the fiery crash on Wednesday evening, May 23.
His identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The crash shut down traffic and started a grass fire at the scene of the crash about 3 miles north of the Thompson exit.
The North Dakota State Patrol said Timothy Mack, 53, of Castlewood, S.D., was driving his 2000 Peterbilt semi pulling a cattle trailer south on the interstate about 6:45 p.m. when it hit the Ford pickup that was traveling at a slower speed and pushed it into the west ditch.
The pickup caught fire and burned, while the 57-year-old victim was ejected and died at the scene, said the Patrol.
Mack was not injured.
Thompson Assistant Fire Chief John Samdahl said there was debris scattered all over the road.
The southbound lanes of the interstate were closed for about two hours because of the debris, cleanup and investigative work, said the Patrol.
The cattle weren’t injured and stayed in the livestock trailer.
