SANTEE, SC : Area evacuated after tanker crashes into Santee McDonald's on Tuesday, December 20th 2016
A tanker crash left the McDonald's in Santee with major damage and knocked out power to the town on Tuesday morning.
According to the Orangeburg Times and Democrat, the driver of the tanker was taken to an area hospital after the truck slammed into the restaurant on Old Number Six Highway, just off of Interstate 95 in Orangeburg County.
South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper Sonny Collins said the truck ran off the left side of the road, hit a utility pole and came to rest partially inside the McDonald's.
The Times and Democrat reports the tanker was empty, but officials worried the tank might still contain some traces of anhydrous ammonia. No leaks were found.
Emergency crews later allowed people back into the surrounding buildings, but the McDonald's remained closed because of the possibility of structural problems, according to the newspaper.
Troopers were not sure if anyone inside the restaurant was hurt.
