Armada Township, MI : State Police Investigating Car Crash Involving Memphis Chief on Monday, June 23, 2014
Memphis Police Chief Jessica Beels was involved in a traffic accident with a FedEx truck at about 4 p.m. Monday at Bordman and Omo roads in Armada Township.
On Tuesday afternoon, Beels said she was headed to the hospital as a result of not feeling well after the accident.
Beels reported she was on her way back from having work done on the patrol car when the incident occurred. She said she was traveling at about 35 mph when she began to slow down for a stop sign. The vehicle slid on the gravel through the intersection, causing the collision with the FedEx truck. She was wearing a seatbelt and was not drinking, but was at fault. Beels said she was extremely shook up immediately after the crash.
The police chief was driving the new 2014 Dodge Charger purchased for $22,430 by city council in March.
“I got a call that let me know of the accident and that there were no serious injuries. Everyone walked away,” Memphis Mayor Daniel Weaver wrote on the Memphis Michigan Local Government Facebook page. “The state of Michigan police reported to the scene to investigate the incident. I have not been provided with a copy of the report.”
Weaver is expecting a complete report at the next city council meeting, set for July 2.
“Until then, everything else is just guessing, and I do not have time to waste on speculation,” Weaver wrote. “Employee issues are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act, so some information may never be known by the general public, but you can feel comfortable knowing that the council you currently have is deeply concerned about the safety and welfare of our citizens. This will be handled with fair and impartial judgment based on all the available facts, once they are given to us.”
On Tuesday, Weaver said: “I don’t know. There’s really not much to tell until I find out exactly what happened. People are quick to jump to conclusions. Nobody loves to see people in trouble more than the police.”
The Michigan State Police did not immediately return calls for comment.
