SAN DIEGO, CA : A 42-year-old male driver was killed on May, Monday 8th 2017
A 42-year-old male driver was killed early Monday morning after crashing into an SUV that had rolled over on Interstate 15 in the Carmel Mountain Ranch area.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after 12:30 a.m. on southbound I-15 near Camino del Norte.
The CHP said a 19-year-old woman driving a red Ford Explorer struck a barrier, causing the vehicle to roll over onto its roof.
Moments later, a black Audi sedan crashed into the upside-down SUV and came to rest several feet away.
The driver of the Audi died at the scene, but the woman in the Ford Explorer survived the impact of the collision that left her trapped inside.
A group of drivers pulled over to assist the woman as emergency crews were called to the scene.
Crews used a jack to lift the SUV and extract the trapped woman. She was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla with major injuries but is expected to survive.
The crash prompted authorities to divert southbound I-15 traffic in the area onto the carpool lanes for several hours. Lanes were fully reopened at 7:20 a.m.
