A Charles City teenager was seriously injured in a two-vehicle traffic accident that occurred early Tuesday evening southeast of Charles City.
According to a report by the Iowa State Patrol, Leo Trebbien, age 17, was transported to the Mayo Clinic health care system in Rochester, Minnesota, by the Mayo helicopter ambulance.
Trebbien was listed in critical condition Wednesday, according to the hospital public affairs department.
The other person involved in the accident, Andrew Hauser, age 41, of Clarksville, was transported to the Waverly Health Center by private vehicle, the report said. He was treated and released, according to a hospital spokesperson.
Trebbien was traveling west on 300th Avenue at about 5:17 p.m. Wednesday in a 1995 Jeep Wrangler, and Hauser was traveling north on Victory Avenue in a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, the State Patrol said. The intersection is about 10½ miles southeast of Charles City and about 4 miles west of Nashua.
According to the report, Trebbien did not stop at a stop sign and he was struck broadside by Hauser, who was pulling an agricultural trailer filled with hay.
Trebbien’s car entered the northwest ditch and struck an embankment, coming to rest. Hauser’s pickup entered the same ditch and came to rest, with the trailer separating from the truck and rolling.
Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts, the report said.
