Nogales, AZ : Three youth was injured in a car crash at Near the intersection of West Frontage Road and Boulevard Del Rey David On Sunday, May 15th, 2016
An underage joyride ended with a car crash into a guardrail north of Nogales city limits early Sunday morning in which two juveniles were ejected from the vehicle and a third was also injured.
The car, a 2013 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, was reportedly being driven by a 15-year-old girl when it crashed shortly after midnight near the intersection of West Frontage Road and Boulevard Del Rey David.
“The driver for some reason lost control of the vehicle which went to the right then the driver overcorrected, hitting the guardrail,” said Bart Graves, spokesman for the Arizona Department of Public Safety, in an email.
The girl, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the car. So was a 14-year-old boy who had been riding in the front passenger seat without safety restraints.
“One of them that was ejected, it was like 60 feet,” said Ernesto Archuleta, public information officer for the Rio Rico Fire District. “I mean, it was bad.”
A Sheriff’s Office dispatch report shows a call reporting the crash at 12:16 a.m. in which the caller said that one victim was not breathing.
The two juveniles who were ejected were subsequently flown by helicopter to Banner-University Medical Center in Tucson. The third passenger, a 13-year-old boy who was in a back seat wearing a seatbelt, was ambulatory at the scene and taken
to the same hospital by an RRFD ground ambulance, Archuleta said.
Archuleta said he did not know the victims’ medical status as of Monday. DPS initially reported that they had suffered “non-life-threatening injuries,” and a spokesman said at 5 p.m. Monday that the agency had not been advised of any changes in
their condition.
Graves said there was no indication that the driver was impaired at the time of the crash. As for the Monte Carlo, he wrote: “The vehicle was not stolen but taken without permission.”
