A North Pole man who was critically injured in an all-terrain vehicle crash Saturday night and medevaced to Anchorage died Sunday, Alaska State Troopers say.

AST spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said Monday that 64-year-old Michael Mutschler was declared dead at Providence Alaska Medical Center, where he had been taken after initial treatment at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

“It was last night at about 7:45 p.m.,” Ipsen said. “Next of kin were notified -- they were actually there.”

Troopers responded to the crash at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday. Ipsen said it took place at the intersection of Yellowstone Road and Independence Circle, northeast of North Pole, where a car was turning onto Yellowstone from Independence. The driver saw Mutschler and stopped, but Mutschler lost control after he saw the car.

“(Mutschler) was headed west on Yellowstone, near the intersection of Independence Circle,” Ipsen said. “The ATV swerved to get out of the way, because it was going at least 40 miles per hour; it rolled several times and Michael was thrown.”
