Provo, UT : One killed in two-car crash in Provo Canyon on Monday, January, 15th 2018

U.S. Highway 189 from Provo Canyon to Heber was closed Monday night in both directions due to a two-car crash, according to the Wasatch County Sheriff’s office.

At about 5:15 p.m., Utah Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched to mile marker 23 near Dock of the Bay in Deer Creek Reservoir. According to a UHP press release, there is one northbound and one southbound travel lane in the area. Preliminary evidence shows a northbound Chevrolet Trailblazer crossed into the southbound lane, the release states.

A southbound Toyota Camry swerved to the right in an attempt to avoid a collision. However, the two vehicles collided nearly head-on, according to the release.

The Camry’s driver was confirmed dead at the scene by the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office. The Trailblazer’s driver was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.

As of 8:45 p.m. Monday, U.S. 189 was still closed at mile marker 23 in both directions.

Drivers were advised to find alternate routes or to plan accordingly through Provo Canyon, Deer Creek Reservoir and to Heber.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers are intermittently phasing traffic through the crash site in both directions. Troopers are working to notify family members and to determine why the SUV crossed into oncoming traffic.
