Cherokee County, SC : Driver killed after losing control of vehicle, hitting tree near Gaffney early Saturday, May 21, 2016
A man was killed in a single-car crash early Saturday near Gaffney.
The Cherokee County coroner said Christopher Bryant McClenaghan, 30, of Cowpens, was driving south on Old Georgia Highway around 2:41 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle on a curve near Beaverdam Road.
The car went off the left side of the road and hit a tree in the yard of the Awaken Church, traveling over 300 feet before it stopped in the northbound lane of the road, the coroner said.
McClenaghan, who was wearing his seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner said.
"Speed is certainly a contributing factor in this fatal crash," the coroner said.
The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
