Portland, OR : Pedestrian hit, killed by car at Glisan at 82nd Ave. and Glisan Street in Portland on Monday morning, Aug 10, 2015

A man died after he was hit by a car Monday morning at the intersection of Northeast 82nd and Glisan Street in Portland.

The crash happened around 9 a.m. Monday; officials say 60-year-old Edgar Caceres of New Jersey was crossing 82nd Avenue eastbound in the northern crosswalk against a "don't walk" sign and was struck by a driver.

A bystander performed CPR on Caceres until paramedics arrived to take him to the hospital. He died shortly after arriving at a local hospital.

Police at the scene said the driver was treated for some medical issues.

Safe walking advocates are pushing for the city to do more to prevent future pedestrian deaths.

"We have incredibly busy streets without safe infrastructure for bikes and people walking," said Aaron Brown, board president of Oregon Walks. "We need more of a conversation on how dangerous it is to walk there."

The City of Portland has pledged its support to the Vision Zero program, which aims at eliminating all traffic fatalities.

"It disproportionately affects our most vulnerable residents and our response to it too often is a shrug," Brown said. "The progress is too slow and too incremental and it was too slow and too increment for the family who lost a loved one today."
