A 21-year old man is dead after getting struck by multiple cars on the freeway in Federal Way Saturday night.

Washington State Patrol said the victim was traveling Southbound on I-5 at S 317th St when a box fell out of his car. The victim pulled over to the right shoulder and walked out to try and retrieve the box and was struck by an oncoming vehicle.

State Patrol said CPR was unsuccessful and the man died at the scene.

All four lanes of Southbound I-5 were blocked for two hours and five minutes, causing three miles of traffic backup.

The deadly collision is under now under investigation.
