HEYBURN, ID : Heyburn councilman killed in car crash on Tuesday, December 6th, 2016
Heyburn City Councilman Clarence “Rocky” Lanier Baker died Tuesday in a one-vehicle crash on I-84 near Hammett.
Elmore County Sheriff Detective Zack Parlin witnessed the crash, which occurred at 10:19 a.m. near milepost 111.
Baker was driving a 2006 Ford F250 westbound and passed Parlin, who was in an unmarked sheriff’s car.
“I saw the vehicle pass me, lose control and slide sideways into the median,” Parlin said.
Baker’s car rolled and landed on its top and slid into the eastbound lanes of traffic.
Baker died at the scene.
Baker’s wife, Georgia Baker, was taken to St. Alphonsus Medical Center in Boise where she was in fair condition Wednesday.
“This will be a real loss for the city,” former mayor George Anderson said.
Anderson worked with Baker for 13 years at the city.
Baker was appointed in June 2002 and served on the Council since then. He was Council president for two years.
“He was a very good councilman and he always had the city in mind in all things,” Anderson said. “He never made a decision that was not well thought over.”
Baker was a volunteer firefighter at the Minidoka County Fire Protection District’s Heyburn Station for 20 years and was assistant chief for many years. When he retired from the station he became a fire commissioner for the district, a position he had served in for 10 years.
