Tiverton, R.I : 50-year-old man suffered arm amputated in SUV rollover crash on Route 177 in Tiverton on Saturday evening, July 4, 2015
A 50-year-old man suffered “catastrophic injuries” when the Chevrolet Tahoe he was driving on Bulgarmarsh Road (Route 177) rolled over Saturday evening, the police said.
The man was trapped inside the vehicle and one of his arms was amputated below the elbow, Tiverton police Capt. Patrick W. Jones said. Rescue crews recovered the man’s arm from the crash scene, packed it for transport and called for a medical helicopter, Jones said. The man was taken by helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital.
The police responded to the crash after multiple 911 calls reported the rollover near the Massachusetts line at about 5:37 p.m., Jones said. Two other occupants of the vehicle — who were not trapped inside — were taken by ambulance to Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, Jones said.
Around 9 p.m. Saturday, Jones said he did not know the conditions of any of the people injured, and he was not ready to identify those in the vehicle, he said. Given the severity of the driver’s injuries, Jones said the hospital was preparing an operating room as the helicopter was transporting him.
Also, because the crash occurred close to Wattuppa/Cook Pond, which is a drinking-water source for the Tiverton-Westport-Fall River area, rescue crews called for assistance cleaning up the fluid leaking from the 1999 Tahoe — gasoline, antifreeze and oil, Jones said. Environmental management crews from Massachusetts and Rhode Island, as well as hazardous-materials crews, responded and cleaned up from the accident before those fluids flowed into the water, Jones said.
