Springfield, OH : Drunk driver responsible for major gas leak after crashing into western Ohio apartment on Sunday, Aug 30, 2015

Police say a drunk driver caused a major natural gas leak when he crashed his pickup truck into the side of an apartment building in western Ohio.

The Dayton Daily News reports the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. Sunday on Rita Drive in Mad River Township.

Witnesses told police the leak was apparent immediately following the collision. Apartments were evacuated and Columbia Gas shut off the natural gas feed to six damaged meters.

Officials say residents weren't displaced but they will not have gas service until meter lines are repaired.

Sgt. Richard Dixon says the driver will be charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, failure to control and a seat belt violation.

The driver, who wasn't identified, was treated for minor injuries. No one else was hurt.
