Terre Haute, IN : One man airlifted after his vehicle collided with another tractor-trailer on Interstate 70 on Thursday evening July 24th 2014

A semi-trailer driver from North Carolina was airlifted to Methodist Hospital today after his vehicle collided with another tractor-trailer on Interstate 70 in far western Vigo County.

The accident happened at about 5:20 p.m. in the eastbound lanes at the 3-mile marker.

Traffic was stopped for nearly 50 minutes before one eastbound lane was reopened, according to Indiana State Police, which responded, along with Vigo County emergency agencies.

Preliminary investigation indicates that traffic was stopped for an earlier crash in the eastbound lanes near the 7-mile marker. A tractor-trailer driven by James Boswell, 64, of Pikeville, N.C., failed to stop and struck another tractor-trailer in the rear. The second tractor-trailer was driven by Pardeep Singh Sidhu, 23, of Bakersfield, Calif.

Boswell was extricated from the vehicle by members of the Sugar Creek Fire/Rescue Department, stabilized by Trans Care EMS and then airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with head and lower leg injuries. Sidhu and his passenger were not injured.

Boswell was driving for Barnes Transportation Services of Wilson, N.C. Sidhu was driving for Haul Freight Inc. of Bakersfield.

A preliminary commercial vehicle inspection by ISP Master Trooper Matt Ames revealed no obvious deficiencies with Boswell or his tractor-trailer; however, a detailed inspection of the unit was expected to be conducted Friday.

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Dan Criswell. Assisting were numerous troopers from the Putnamville District, Vigo County SheriffÕs Office, West Terre Haute Police Department, Sugar Creek Fire/Rescue, Trans Care EMS and IU Health air ambulance.
