Meadowbrook, IL : Two injured in car-truck collision on Illinois 140, west of Neunaber Drive on Friday morning, May 27, 2016

Two drivers were taken to a local hospital, one with serious injuries, following a car-truck collision Friday morning on Illinois 140 just west of Neunaber Drive.

The accident occurred at about 9:30 a.m., according to Kelly Birdsong, assistant fire chief for the Meadowbrook Fire Department. An initial report from Birdsong indicates the truck was heading westbound and the car eastbound, but little else had been determined as of 10 a.m.

Firefighters extricated the car driver from his vehicle. Birdsong said authorities had originally intended to airlift the driver, but a helicopter was unable to land because of weather. He was instead taken by ambulance.

The driver of the truck was also taken by ambulance to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Birdsong said witnesses told police the car may have swerved in front of the truck. Both vehicles left the road into a shallow ravine, taking out a guardrail and kicking rock, dirt and other debris onto the roadway.

The truck was turned on its side, and the cab ended up in Greg Martin’s front yard.

“I was in my bedroom,” Martin said. “A great big noise, I heard, like the car hitting the truck first, then a great big bang. I jumped out, grabbed my phone and went outside.”

He said he told both drivers to remain still.

“The guy was trapped in the car, and the guy in the diesel was stuck in there trying to climb out the top,” he said.

By about 11 a.m., tow trucks had arrived and workers were trying to determine if the truck’s cargo – dog food – would have to be offloaded before the truck could be moved. The road remained closed as of 11 a.m.
