Fort Madison, IA : No serious injuries in Fort Madison school bus crash Wednesday morning, October 22, 2014
A Fort Madison school bus was involved in a crash Wednesday morning.
According to Nicole Baker, the Director of Transportation for the Fort Madison School District, it appears that the SUV failed to stop at the stop sign heading North on 20th Street and the driver of bus #3, who was travelling east on Avenue E, was unable to avoid the collision.
Baker reports that emergency responders spoke with the students, the bus associate and the drivers and assessed the situation. No injuries were reported.
Michael Sheering, the principal at Holy Trinity Elementary, helped transfer the students to another bus and accompanied the bus to Holy Trinity, Baker said.
The bus driver later complained of a headache and shoulder pain and went to the hospital to be checked over and Baker added that the students will be monitored throughout the day for any change in condition.
The SUV was towed from the scene while the school bus was driven back to the bus lot, Baker said. She says they estimate the bus damage to be about $5,000 before figuring in labor costs.
Baker reports that the bus will not be available for use for about a week while waiting for parts to come in.
The driver of the SUV was cited for no insurance and an investigation is pending, according to the school district.
