Tunnel, NJ : Three people were killed in a single-car crash early Thursday July 3 2014.
Three people were killed in a single-car crash early Thursday after it smashed into a guard rail, flew into the air, and broke into pieces in a lane leading to the Lincoln Tunnel in New Jersey– backing up traffic for miles, officials said.
A woman and two men, who were in one car with Massachusetts plates, died at the scene of the accident in North Bergen about 5:40 a.m., according to a spokesman. The collision happened where New Jersey Route 3 meets Interstate 495.
After the car went airborne, it landed sideways on the driver’s side door, and slid 153 feet, the spokesman said.
It then smacked into a light pole. The impact of the crash tore the car apart.
All of Route 3 East’s lanes were closed for more than two hours, snarling traffic, said spokesman Mike Makarski.
The driver appeared to be speeding, but the crash is still under investigation.
The names of the driver and passengers have not been released yet by authorities.
Three people were killed in a car accident there last August, and a man then died in a wreck nearby in September.
