Gillette, WY : One person dead, two injured in 2-vehicle crash Highway 50 south of Gillette on Monday afternoon, February 2, 2015
A 32-year-old Gillette man died in a car crash Monday on Highway 50 about 24 miles south of the city.
At about 1:30 p.m., a gray 1990 Jeep Cherokee drifted off the west edge of the highway for an undetermined reason and then tried to maneuver back onto the roadway, Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Will Zilka said. The driver over-corrected and began to spin into the path of a white 2006 Chevy pickup pulling a flatbed trailer.
The Chevy tried to avoid the collision, but its front end collided with the passenger side of the Jeep, resulting in the Jeep rolling over multiple times, Zilka said.
Alfred Banda, a passenger in the Jeep, died at the scene from multiple broken bones and internal injuries sustained in the crash, Campbell County Coroner Laura Sundstrom said. The 31-year-old driver of the Jeep also was hurt and taken to the hospital. Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt.
The 51-year-old driver of the Chevy was not wearing a seat belt either and also was hurt and taken to the hospital. A 26-year-old passenger in the Chevy was the only one of the four to be wearing a seat belt and was not hurt.
Names of the two drivers and the passenger in the Chevy were not available.
Zilka described the injuries of the two men taken to the hospital as “severe,” and said they were treated and kept at least overnight. Their conditions were not available.
Possible drug and/or alcohol use is being investigated as a factor in the accident, Zilka said.
