Indianapolis, IN : Semi driver injured in crash just east of Indiana-Ohio border on Thursday, 13th October 2016
The Van Wert Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a single-vehicle injury crash that occurred on Ohio 613 one mile east of the Indiana/Ohio state line.
At around 9:30 a.m. Thursday a 2007 Freightliner semi driven by Kyle P. Becker, 28, of Sulphur Springs was traveling eastbound on Ohio 613. The semi drifted off the right side of the road causing the semi and tanker trailer connected to it to overturn into a deep ditch. Becker was trapped in the semi cab for over an hour as Payne Volunteer Fire and EMS workers tried to free him. Becker was taken by Mercy Health’s Life Flight helicopter to a Toledo, Ohio, hospital.
The semi tanker contained liquid fertilizer. A small amount had leaked during the vehicle recovery. Crews worked to prevent any more spills and to safely remove the semi and tanker trailer from the road. Ohio 613 was closed during the crash investigation and down to one-lane intermittently during scene cleanup.
Becker was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
The Van Wert Post was assisted by the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, Payne Fire and EMS, Van Wert County EMA, Mercy Health Life Flight, Robinson’s Towing, and Gordon Enterprises.
