Mount Airy, North Carolina
Mount Airy police are investigating a weekend incident in which a local moped rider was killed in a collision with a vehicle.
The victim of the Friday night mishap was identified as James Michael Trevathan, 61, whose address was believed to be 187 Sexton Road, Mount Airy, although that could not be confirmed Saturday.
Trevathan was riding the moped on West Pine Street near the entrance ramp for U.S. 52-South when the two-wheel conveyance was struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe sport-utility vehicle driven by Hensley Moore, authorities said. Trevathan was pronounced dead at the scene.Moore, the SUV driver, is a local resident, but his exact address and age were unavailable Saturday from the Mount Airy Police Department. No injuries were reported to him in the collision that officers were still sorting through Saturday afternoon.
“No charges have been filed — at this point, the investigation is ongoing,” Police Chief Dale Watson said then.
He added that as part of the probe, the police department will conduct an accident reconstruction to pinpoint what happened, a normal procedure with traffic fatalities in the city.
“The reconstructionists will be investigating the accident to determine if contributory negligence (by the moped rider) played a role in the crash,” Watson said.
“We’re saddened this happened,” he said of the fatality. “We’re hoping to bring a resolution, as far as the investigation.”
