Westport, CT : Driver killed in tractor trailer crash Sasco Creek Road bridge on Interstate 95 on Friday January 22 2016
A tractor trailer struck the Sasco Creek Road bridge on Interstate 95 late Friday morning, killing the driver.
The crash, between exits 18 and 19, shut down the right and center northbound lanes back to Exit 17 shortly before noon, while firefighters from Fairfield and Westport extricated the driver from the truck cab.
According to an accident report from State Police Troop G, 43-year-old Issiaga Toure, of Providence, R.I., was driving a truck in the northbound right lane when, “for an unknown reason,” the truck “drifted off the roadway to the right where it struck and went through a metal beam guardrail.”
The semi then “struck a lamp pole and a metal highway sign before striking the bridge support for the Sasco Creek Road overpass,” according to the report.
Toure was pronounced dead at the scene.
About 11 gallons of fuel and other fluids poured from the truck onto the roadway. Traffic was backed up for nearly 10 miles.
Kelly Grant, the state police spokeswoman, said there were three or four “fender-benders” in the crush of vehicles. Traffic remained slow on the interstate northbound into the evening commute.
