CHESTER COUNTY, SC : Two killed in fiery multiple-vehicle crash on I-77 in Chester County on Thursday, 1st September, 2016
Two people were killed and ten others injured in a traffic collision involving multiple tractor trailers and other vehicles on Interstate 77 in Chester County Thursday, according to the Chester County coroner.
The crash happened around 3:13 p.m. on northbound I-77 near mile marker 68, which is just north of Exit 65, the Lancaster Highway exit. Emergency Management officials said it appeared a tractor trailer jackknifed while attempting to stop for traffic that had braked ahead, which led to a series of crashes that affected both north and southbound lanes.
The truck driver killed was identified Friday as 59-year-old Norman Edward Kimble of Pennsylvania. The other person killed will be identified after their family has been notified of their death.
Three tractor trailers and four cars were involved in the crash. The Interstate was shut down in both directions.
“We actually had to get off (the interstate). They wasn’t letting anymore cars on the freeway, on the highway right now,” said driver Charles Stephenson.
The coroner said that Kimble and another person were pronounced dead at the scene.
“Horrible, horrible news. Never want to hear something like that,” said Anthony Dicesare, a driver passing through the area.
Officials said a child was thrown from one of the vehicles in a car seat. The child, who was found in the middle of the road still in that car seat, is OK. However, ten other people were injured in the crash. Their names and conditions have not been released.
The Chester County Coroner said the crash scene "looked like a war zone."
