WALKERTON, IN : One killed, one hurt in a crash on May, Thursday, 25th 2017
A stretch of U.S. 6 near Walkerton has reopened after a fatal Thursday afternoon head on collision between a pickup and a tractor trailer.
LaPorte County Police Capt. Mike Kellems said Michael Megyeri, 63, of South Bend, was driving west on U.S. 6 when his 2004 Dodge pickup crossed the center line and struck an eastbound semi-truck. Megyeri was pronounced dead at the scene, while the operator of the semi had minor injuries.
Kellems said the collision happened just after noon at 875 East, a quarter mile west of the St. Joseph County line.
The semi driver tried to avoid the accident by leaving the road and driving through a wire fence. The truck was carrying a concrete hardening product and there was no spillage, Kellems said.
Buddy Kasinger, a spokesman for LaPorte County Emergency Medical Service, said a helicopter was requested to transport the critically injured driver to a hospital, but a low cloud cover prevented one from coming out.
''There was a prolonged extrication to get him out of the pickup truck," Kasinger said. "We were able to get him into the ambulance, but at that time he had no pulse.''
Investigators were planning toxicology tests to determine of the pickup driver may have suffered a medical issue. Kellems said the semi driver passed a certified breath test.
