Oakdale, CA : Modesto man dies in Merced County car crash on Sunday afternoon, August 28, 2016

A Modesto man died Sunday afternoon after being ejected from his car in a crash in Merced County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

CHP officers responded to a crash on Oakdale Road, just east of Oakdale Court, about 4:15 p.m. to find a car in a canal.

The 1991 Honda was found in a ravine with major damage. The driver, Zackery Andrews, 22, was found a short way away and died at the scene. The Merced County Coroner’s Office confirmed the driver’s identity Monday.

Investigators believe the driver was headed eastbound on Oakdale Road and lost control of the car, which ran off the edge of the road, hit a tree and ended up in the ravine. The driver was ejected from the car and found near a creek.

Officers are unsure when exactly the crash occurred. Drugs and alcohol have not been ruled out as a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
