1 critically injured in Ponte Vedra Beach accident

A single-car accident Friday morning in the Ponte Vedra Beach area left one man critically injured.
It was the latest in a string of serious vehicle accidents in St. Johns County that began Thursday.

Early Friday morning, Romildo “Ray” Gottuso, 75, of Ponte Vedra Beach, was driving a 2005 Mazda pickup truck when he went off the road, hit a mailbox and was partially ejected, according to a St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office release. The accident happened in the 3100 block of South Ponte Vedra Boulevard.
Officials flew Gottuso to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, where he underwent surgery.He was in critical condition as of Friday evening.

On Friday, Florida Highway Patrol officials released information on a Thursday wreck that left two dead.
On Thursday afternoon around 2 p.m., David Wynn Wilkinson, 61, of Danville, Va., was driving a 2011 GMC Sierra pickup truck north on Interstate 95, according to FHP. Mary Horne Shaffer, 61, of Bristol, Tenn., was a passenger in the car.
A 1999 Safari motorhome was behind them.Both vehicles drove into a work zone at mile marker 328, where the inside lane was closed to traffic. After driving into the work zone, the driver of the motorhome swerved left into the safety zone to avoid hitting stopped traffic, according to the release. At the same time, the pickup truck went into the safety zone in front of the motorhome and stopped.

The front of the motorhome hit the back of the pickup truck, according to the release. The truck went onto the median and hit a guardrail.
