Oceanside, CA: Motorcyclist Dies in Rear-End Crash on Hwy 78 in Oceanside on Friday, July 17th 2015

A motorcyclist killed in a crash on state Route 78 rear-ended a sedan at a high speed, the California Highway Patrol said Friday.The 43-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Passat told officers she was headed east on the freeway near College Boulevard at about freeway speeds at 9:30 p.m. Thursday when she saw in her rear view mirror the 35-year-old victim and another rider quickly approaching, CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt said.The Volkswagen’s driver was attempting to move out of the fast lane when the victim’s 2000 Kawasaki Ninja struck the back of her car.Bettencourt said the Oceanside man was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene.His name was not immediately available.The fatally injured rider’s companion — who was on another motorcycle — did not stay at the scene after the collision, and it remained unknown if that rider was involved, Bettencourt said.The Volkswagen’s driver was not hurt.Bettencourt said neither alcohol nor drugs were apparent factors in the crash.
