Seattle, WA : Bremerton man died from injuries in a motorcycle crash at Burwell Street and Park Avenue on Tuesday, January 5, 2016

A Bremerton man has died from injuries in a Jan. 5 motorcycle crash at Burwell Street and Park Avenue in Bremerton.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., Shannon D. Wheaton, 47, was riding his Harley-Davidson out of the Bremerton ferry tunnel when he collided with a Toyota Tacoma driven by a 63-year-old Tacoma man, according to Bremerton police. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

An electrician who'd recently done work on the St. James Cathedral in Seattle, Wheaton was "just an all-around awesome guy," according to Jeff Gogerty, who rode the ferry with him each day to and from Seattle.

Wheaton was rushed to MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital. He was moved to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he died Saturday, according to Bremerton Police Lt. Peter Fisher. The King County Medical Examiner's Office, which identified Wheaton, said he died of blunt force injuries from the collision.

Fisher said both the motorcycle and truck were moved before police arrived, making it difficult to "reconstruct" the crash in an effort to study what happened. The department's traffic investigators did not examine the scene the night of the crash. Investigators will rely on witness interviews and will conduct scientific analysis based on those accounts to determine what took place, he said.

"We can come to as close to an estimate of what happened, but that's about it," Fisher said.

Once the investigation is complete, police will send a report to the Kitsap County Prosecutor's Office for review.
