SALEM, WA : One injured in crash near Salem on Sunday, 20th May 2018
One person was injured Sunday night when a car merging onto a ramp hydroplaned off the road and into a ditch.
At 10:15 p.m., the Chrysler 300, heading east in the rain, merged onto the I-90 ramp three miles south of Salem and began to hydroplane on the wet road. This caused the driver to lose control and the car to slide through the intersection of I-90 and U.S. Highway 81, down an embankment and through a barbed wire fence before coming to rest in a ditch.
Katelynn Benedict, 21, of Yankton, was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Sioux Falls for minor injuries. The driver, Juan Burciaga, 24, of Yankton, and a child in the backseat of the car were uninjured. The child was restrained, but Benedict and Burciaga were cited for not wearing seat belts.
No other vehicles were involved, and Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident.
