Antioch, CA : 14 injured, 4 critically in a multiple-vehicle crash on Highway 4 early Saturday evening, April 1, 2017
Four people were in critical condition, among as many as 14 injured, in a multiple-vehicle crash on Highway 4 early Saturday evening, police and fire officials said.
The accident occurred shortly after 6:15 p.m. in the westbound direction of the freeway between A Street and the Lone Tree Way onramp.
California Highway Patrol officers were responding to a report of a bumper in the roadway just east of A Street when the call came in about a collision in the same area. A Toyota minivan carrying three passengers had rear-ended a Toyota sedan with seven occupants that was stopped in the lane behind the bumper, according to the CHP.
“When the crews arrived on scene they found several vehicles involved, with all lanes blocked and people lying in the roadway,” said Contra Costa Fire District spokesman Robert Marshall.
Two of the critically injured were transported by helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento and a 14-year-old girl was taken to Children’s Hospital Oakland, according to authorities. The fourth critically injured person was transported to a hospital by ground ambulance.
The CHP received its first report of the accident at 6:18 p.m. A Sig Alert was issued at 6:33 p.m. and lifted at 7:47 p.m. Check back for updates.
