Northern Michigan authorities say that a man, woman and three children ages 8 months to 10 years are in critical condition three days after a car whose driver had been drinking rear-ended their horse-drawn buggy in the fog.

The crash happened in the fog on Sunday night in Clare County's Arthur Township, about 80 miles north-northwest of Grand Rapids. The sheriff's department says nine people were in the buggy.

Those hospitalized are a 34-year-old man, a 34-year-old woman, and children ages 8 months, 5 years and 10 years. The sheriff's department says they're in critical but stable condition.

The department says alcohol and weather are suspected factors in the crash. A 22-year-old Gladwin man was driving the car.
