Columbus, OH : Girl killed, at least 7 others hurt in 10-vehicle pileup on Ohio Turnpike on Sunday, 14th August, 2016

The Milan Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash involving 10 vehicles traveling eastbound in a construction zone in Erie County’s Groton Township.The crash was called in at 2:16 p.m. at the 110.8 milepost, eastbound, on the Ohio Turnpike.

Investigation at the scene of the crash determined a Volvo commercial semi was traveling eastbound in a single lane construction zone and failed to stop with assured clear distance. The commercial vehicle proceeded to strike nine separate vehicles ranging from a pick-up truck, sport utility vehicles, and passenger cars. The nine vehicles struck had slowed down in traffic, but had not stopped when the commercial truck hit them.

As a result of the impact from the commercial vehicle, at least seven persons were injured and a young female child was killed. The child was pronounced dead at the scene by a Life Nurse and the Erie County Coroner was contacted. The injured were taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center and Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.

The traffic crash caused significant back-ups on the Ohio Turnpike both eastbound and westbound. One lane westbound was kept open the entire time the crash was investigated and roadway cleared. The Ohio Turnpike Commission, with the help of Kokosing Construction Company, were able to remove a section of the barrier wall and get the stopped traffic in the construction lane cleared from the scene at 4:59 p.m.

The Milan Post was assisted by the Groton Township Fire, North Central EMS, Toledo St. Vincent LifeFlight, Erie County Sheriff Office including their Chaplain, and the Edison Local School District as one of their school buses was used to transport all the patrons involved in the crash off the roadway and to a safe location.

Further details and the complete investigation are pending at this time. Charges for this offense will be reviewed by the Erie County Prosecutor’s Office. Alcohol and/or drug use is unknown at this time.
