An Anne Arundel County woman died after a single-vehicle crash on Md. 97 in Carroll County, according to police.

At approximately 8:22 p.m. Wednesday, a silver 2003 BMW 525i, driven by Samantha Nycole Penix, 23, of Severn, was traveling south on Littlestown Pike (Md. 97) in the area of Blacks Schoolhouse Road when her vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree, according to a news release from the Maryland State Police Westminster Barrack.

Police aren't sure what caused Penix's vehicle to drive off the road.

Emergency personnel from the Pleasant Valley volunteer fire company responded to the scene, and Penix was taken to Carroll Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
