Munster,IN : 2 killed in hit-and-run crash early morning on I-80/94 on March, Saturday 24th 2018
Two men were killed early Saturday after they got out of their SUV when it crashed on the Borman Expressway near Grant Street, according to an Indiana State Police news release. One of the vehicles involved in the series of crashes fled the scene.
Killed were Nathaniel McIntee, 31, of Merrillville, and Jason Howard, 34. Indiana State Police said Howard was from Fairmont, West Virginia, while the Lake County coroner's office stated he was from Detroit.
Police said a 2002 Ford Explorer, occupied by Howard, McIntee and 29-year-old Michael T. McIntee, of Gary, was eastbound when it sideswiped a 2009 Freightliner driven by Levis Coreas, 39, of Miramar, Florida. After hitting the trailer, the Explorer overcorrected, lost control and flipped onto its roof.
Howard and Nathanial McIntee crawled out to help the back seat passenger, Michael T. McIntee, when the Explorer was struck by a black, four-door Volkswagen. The VW then struck a 2004 Honda Pilot that had pulled off on the inner shoulder so its driver, Ryan J. Vlasic, 37, of Madison, Alabama, could see if the others needed help, police said.
The VW's driver got out of the vehicle, then immediately got back in the car and took off eastbound, police said.
Bradley M. Stevenson, 34, of Munster, drove a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe that was also involved in the string of crashes, police said. Stevenson told police a car in front him hit the brakes and swerved to the right, when Stevenson also swerved to the right he told police he hit something.
Nathaniel McIntee and Howard were pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County coroner's office. Nathaniel McIntee is Michael McIntee's brother and Howard is his nephew, the release states.
Stevenson and Michael McIntee were transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary with non-life-threatening injuries.
Traffic was diverted onto Grant Street until about 9 a.m. while the investigation was underway, police said.
State police are asking anyone who has information on the driver of the VW or his vehicle to contact Detective Gary Runde at 219-696-6242. The VW is a black four-door, possibly a Passat, with heavy front end damage, based on descriptions and evidence left at the scene. Information can be left anonymously.
