Saint Charles, MO : St. Louis County woman pepper-sprayed twice after DWI crash that injured passenger on Saturday night, September 13, 2014
A St. Louis County woman who police say got into a DWI crash Saturday night was pepper-sprayed twice after she resisted arrest and threatened a state trooper.
Danielle Nicole Scola, 26, of the 4100 block of O'Bannon Road, remained in custody Monday on felony assault for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, resisting arrest and attempting to escape from custody. She also is charged with two misdemeanors — making a false report and assaulting a law enforcement officer.
Police gave this account of the incident:
Scola was driving a 2004 Ford Explorer eastbound on Highway 94 at Highway D at 7:08 p.m. Saturday when she traveled off the right side of the road then over-corrected, flipping her SUV on its side. Her passenger, Shane McKinney, 33, of House Springs, suffered minor injuries.
A police officer who witnessed the crash stayed on scene until the Missouri Highway Patrol arrived. Scola claimed that a man she didn't know was driving at the time of the crash, but the officer who witnessed the crash said Scola and McKinney were the only two people in the SUV. Her passenger also said Scola was the driver.
As the trooper handcuffed Scola, she tried to pull away several times. After she was placed in the cruiser, she unbuckled herself and tried to stand up. The trooper took Scola out of the patrol car and told her to comply with his instructions, but she resisted again, and he pepper-sprayed her.
While driving to the hospital to check her blood-alcohol content, Scola made several threats, including "I hope to God you don't have any kids or a wife, 'cause they're dead."
At the hospital, Scola tried to run away. The trooper caught up to her, and she continued to resist, so he pepper-sprayed her again. She tried to kick the trooper in the chest.
The results of Scola's blood draw are not yet available. Her bail is set at $25,000 cash only.
McKinney, the passenger in Scola's car, was transported to Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur.
