SPRING VALLEY, AL : 2 killed in motorcycle wreck on Sunday, March 5th 2017
Authorities said two Colbert County people were killed Sunday afternoon when the motorcycle they were riding crashed coming out of a curve on LaGrange Road in the Spring Valley community.
Coroner Carlton Utlety identified the victims as Kenneth David Pugh, 49, Cottontown Lane, Leighton, and his passenger, Pamela Denise Brooks Thrasher, 36, Cottontown Hill Lane, Leighton.
Troopers said the crash occurred around 2:40 p.m. Sunday in front of the Spring Valley Volunteer Fire Department, which is south of Muscle Shoals.
Utley pronounced the two victims dead at the scene. He said the man and woman both died from massive head trauma.
Reports indicate they were traveling south on the motorcycle that officials at the scene said Pugh was trying out.
Emergency personnel at the scene said it appears that Pugh came out of a curve, lost control of the motorcycle, and went off the roadway.
Once the motorcycle went off the roadway, it hit a message board sign and mailbox in front of the fire department.
Witnesses at the scene said the man and woman were thrown from the motorcycle, and ended up physically hitting the fire department building.
Officials at the scene said the motorcycle flipped over several times, ending up 20 to 25 feet from the roadway in the fire department parking lot.
Utley, who is also a member of the volunteer fire department, said unfortunately this is not the first time there has been a wreck in the vicinity of the fire department.
"They come out of the curve and lose control," he said."Over the last 10 years, we've had at least 10 wrecks here."
He said last year, someone came out of the curve, ran through the fence around the Spring Valley Water Authority, which is near the fire department, and ended up going into the building.
Utley said members of the department are hoping to work with the county commission to try to get guardrail installed that could prevent people from running off the roadway when they come out of the curve.
Sunday's accidents are the fourth and fifth fatalities in the region this year.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the accident.
