Reston,VI : James Madison High School football coach dies in car accident on June, Saturday 24th 2017

James Madison High School football head coach Leonard Schultz died late Saturday after he was hit by a drifting box truck while on I-495 in Springfield.

Schultz, 52, was traveling with his nephew, Albert Schultz IV, 24, when they stopped in a median on the inner loop of the Beltway to re-hitch a boat to the back of their pick-up truck.

A box truck then drifted toward the median and struck the boat and both men, with Schultz’s nephew getting injured in the impact of the crash, according to a Virginia State Police spokesperson, as reported by WTOP on Sunday.

Schultz and his nephew were both transported to Inova Hospital in Fairfax, where the football coach ultimately died. Albert Schultz remains in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The box truck driver, identified as Woodbridge resident Carlos Alberto Garcia, 42, was not hurt in the accident, and police said that he had been charged with reckless driving.

Schultz became head coach of Madison High School’s varsity football team in 2011 and previously worked at the Vienna school as a special education teacher. He also was a Madison alum, graduating in 1983.

“Those who knew Mr. Schultz understood him to be a person of integrity whose life and dedication to his students, staff and community were an inspiration to all of us,” Madison principal Greg Hood said in a letter to the JMHS community. “I know I speak for our faculty and students, as well as myself, when I tell you that Mr. Schultz’s death has left a void that can never be entirely filled. We were privileged to know and work with him.”
